What is Bar Harbor Famous For? | Geddy’s

Bar Harbor, Maine is a charming New England coastal town and the largest community on Mount Desert Island. But what exactly makes Bar Harbor famous? From breathtaking natural beauty and rich history to fresh Maine lobster and renowned institutions, this seaside destination has something for everyone.

Whether you’re planning a trip or just curious, here’s why Bar Harbor stands out as one of the most iconic travel spots in the U.S.

1. Natural Beauty of Bar Harbor

Nestled on the rugged Maine coastline, Bar Harbor is surrounded by pristine islands, scenic harbors, and the towering mountains of Acadia National Park.

In the mid-19th century, painters from the Hudson River School, such as Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, Fitz Henry Lane and William Hart, were captivated by the region’s landscapes, immortalizing its beauty in their artwork. Today, visitors can experience the same breathtaking scenery by hiking, kayaking, or simply soaking in the coastal views.

Fun Fact: Some of Thomas Cole’s paintings featuring Bar Harbor are now valued between $150,000 – $250,000. So, come find your Bar Harbor masterpiece … or paint your own.

Rich in History, Bar Harbor’s summer residents include the most famous families in America.

2. A Rich and Prestigious History

During the Gilded Age, Bar Harbor was a playground for America’s wealthiest families. It rivaled Newport, Rhode Island, as a summer retreat for elite figures like the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Roosevelts, Morgans, DuPonts, Proctors, Livingstons, Fords, Pulitzers, Bouviers and Astors. Grand estates lined the shores until the “Great Fire of 1947,” destroyed many of these historic homes, reshaping the town forever.

While most of the mansions are gone, you can still experience a taste of that opulence by renting The Bayview – a former Vanderbilt summer cottage.
