Humble Beginnings to Unforgettable Moments: Reflecting on Geddy’s Memorable Milestones
Our journey has been adorned with countless milestones that have contributed to our legacy. Among those, two pivotal events, involving changes in ownership, have shaped our evolution. Ultimately, transitioning from a local watering hole to one of Bar Harbor foremost restaurants. In a sense, Geddy’s has matured alongside our patrons … navigating through the changing landscape of trends, generations, and palates.
Where It All Began: Honoring The Legacy of Gerry Mitchell and Geddy’s of Maine
In 1974, Gerry “Geddy” Mitchell acquired a dilapidated Bar Harbor bar, rebranding it as Geddy’s. He, then, transformed the once dingy and dangerous seaside saloon into a celebrated hotspot, renowned for its world-class entertainment. Performers included Bonnie Raitt, Wynton Marsalis, Taj Mahal, Pure Prairie League, Arlo Guthrie, Livingston Taylor, and Los Lobos. Thus, Geddy’s quickly became a beloved destination, attracting both local residents and visitors from around the world.
Embracing Change: Arthur and Heather Transformation of Geddy’s in Bar Harbor
The Early Years
In 1987, Arthur and Heather Davis took the reins of Geddy’s infusing new energy into the bar. They transformed it into a lively late-night Bar Harbor dance club. Initially, Geddy’s featured live entertainment and popular local DJs, adding a fresh dimension to its already vibrant atmosphere. It became the ultimate spot to see and be seen. Lines stretched out the door as eager patrons clamored to join the excitement. Inside, guests kicked up their heels, often dancing on tables until the early morning hours. The iconic” Dance Your Ass Off,” t-shirt became a beloved symbol of the spirited celebrations and lively atmosphere. Amidst the laughter and music, lifelong friendships were forged, and romances blossomed – creating the enduring legacy of memories that still linger in the air today.
The Evolution
In the early 1990’s, Geddy’s transitioned from a bustling bar to a beloved restaurant. As patrons now sought both food and drinks, Geddy’s catered to customer requests by ordering food from local restaurants. Eventually, the idea of offering food in-house emerged, leading to the creation of Geddy’s first menus. These menus were hand-drawn. And they featured a limited selection of pizza, burgers, and nachos. It marked the beginning of Geddy’s culinary journey that would ultimately transform it into a beloved cornerstone of Bar Harbor. Cherished for its rich history, warm hospitality, enduring legacy … and fresh local seafood.
The transformation of Geddy’s commenced with the renovation of the main bar and the addition of the open kitchen. Furthermore, the subsequent removal of the downstairs pub paved the way for the creation of the retail shop, Geddy’s Down-Under. These renovations completely reshaped the boisterous pub into a fun, family-friendly restaurant … and one of Bar Harbor’s premier dining destinations.
