1. Natural Beauty of Bar Harbor
With its abundant islands and mountainous coastal terrain, Bar Harbor attracted the Hudson River School artists in the mid-19th Century. For instance, Thomas Cole, Frederic Edwin Church, Fitz Henry Lane and William Hart, among others, painted landscapes and seascapes of Mount Desert Island’s spectacular scenery. 2. Bar Harbor Has A Rich History
During the Gilded Age, Bar Harbor quickly became the exclusive summer resort of the rich and famous, who were initially drawn to the area by the Hudson River Artists’ paintings. By the late-19th Century, the town rivaled Newport, Rhode Island in both wealth and prestige. With over 30 glamorous hotels and 170 grand shoreline estates, Bar Harbor’s residents included prominent families like the Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Roosevelts, Morgans, DuPonts, Proctors, Livingstons, Fords, Pulitzers, Bouviers and Astors. However, the “Great Fire of 1947,” destroyed many of the grand summer cottages. It would also forever re-shape the town’s history for decades to come.
